San Diego, CA

January 29th and 30th brought us to the Mission Bay Aquatic Center in San Diego, California for South 1 & 2. The weekend proved beautiful and sunny, with an overall consistent breeze from the North. The gracious Darya of the UCSD team provided housing for the weekend – many thanks to her and
her roommates!

Varsity A team, Matt Sirignano and Sarah Lewis, collected one 4th place finish, and Varsity B team, Sam Wheeler and Tara Misra, sailed smoothly into one 5th place and one 3rd place finish. Over all UCLA now ranks as sthe 5th school in its division.

Rose Bowl Intersectional
Jan 9 2005

Long Beach, CA

By Sarah Lewis
January 8th and 9th brought us to Long Beach, California for the 20th annual Rosebowl regatta, this year hosted by USC. Despite the heavy rain over 70 high school and collegiate teams were in attendance, bringing in a total of over 300 sailors – the largest combined high school and college regatta in the country. Many thanks to Lyzz who spoke at the college-high school forum on behalf of the UCLA team promoting our democratic and “family-like” team.

Along with the rain came wind, and lots of it. A southwestern breeze brought in a steady 8-10 knots on Saturday, and a stronger 16-20 knots on Sunday. While skippers and crew enjoyed the breeze, the rest of the team did their best to keep dry and warm under a canopy of umbrellas. All things considered, we returned home happily exhausted from the weekend’s events.
