St. Francis Intersectional

As the UCLA team headed to Norcal for the Annual St. Francis regatta the rains cleared leaving two beautiful days full of sunshine and lots of wind! 31 varsity teams came from all over the country, including the Universities of Hawaii, Notre Dame, and Columbia. Steady winds, characteristic of this region, blew around 12-15 knots both days, with gusts over 18 knots. Clearly this was not the weather for light air crews, as Varsity B crew Sarah Lewis learned after falling out of a moving boat, but recovering with a 16th place after losing only 2 boats. On Sunday JV races ended early due to high winds and multiple capsizes. UCI took an early lead on the weekend’s races, which it was able to hold onto despite strong comebacks by USC and Stanford.

South 5-6

Santa Barbara, CA

South 5 and 6 were held in the beautiful Santa Barbara on where we were greeted with blue and sunny skies. Before the weekend’s fleet regattas, on Friday UCLA participated in a friendly team race competition along with UCSB, USCD, UCI, USC and Cal. Steady winds allowed us to complete a double round robin. UCI and USC tied for 1st with 7-1 leads each. On Saturday UCSD swept South 5 under USC’s and UCI’s feet (or shall we say fleet). On Sunday at South 6 races were cut short due to a dying wind, only allowing 3 races per division. Still USC ended the day with a 1st place finish. Both regattas UCLA achieved the 5th place we needed to secure a spot in PCIYRA District Championships. Thanks to Kelly and Lyzz for driving up the trailer!
