Regatta Report: South 3-4
Marina Del Rey, CA (Hosted by UCLA)
UCLA hosted the PCIYRA South 3-4 regatta at our home facility in Marina Del Rey. Shiftier winds throughout the week previous favorably settled out for day one of the event. Blowing steadily from the southwest, the first day saw six races on both the A and B rotation and was refreshingly described as "college FJ racing at its best" by UCSB head coach Ty Reed. With nearly perfect conditions, UCSB clenched day one and UCLA finished mid fleet. The day was not without excitement for UCLA Sailing, however, as most notably skipper Matt Sirignano and crew Sarah Lewis grabbed a second, then first place finish. The Santa Ana winds gently rolled through the Marina Aquatic Center early
on day two, but then faded as morning wore on. Shifting to the traditional southwest direction, the channel then filled in and racing continued. UCLA again found itself in mid fleet, as USC dominated the field. With the exception of weak winds early Sunday morning, South 3-4 was run with remarkable efficiency and a big thanks to the Marina Aquatic Center, specifically Vlad Mikulich, John Nelson, and our coach Garrett Woodworth is in order. UCLA Sailing now turns it attention to team racing and our next regatta hosted by Cal Berkeley.

Regatta Report: South 1-2
San Diego, CA (Hosted by UCSD)
After a short drive from Los Angeles to San Diego, an impressive showing of more then twenty UCLA sailors arrived to compete in their first race series of the spring season. Day one proved to be sunny and brought westerly winds ranging from six to eight knots. Representing UCLA’s two varsity boats, skippers Matt Sirignano and Sam Wheeler beat out Cal Poly SLO’s varsity team. Warmer temperatures but shiftier winds blowing four to eight knots from the southwest on day two provided an additional challenge to racers, but UCLA Varsity maintained a similar performance to day one. The well-orchestrated regatta in San Diego made for aggressive and fair competition. Hosting South 3-4 at Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles on February 11-12, UCLA looks forward to racing on its home turf.

Regatta Report: Stoney Burke Intersectional
Redwood City, CA (Hosted by Cal and Stanford)
Traditionally Cal's annual intersectional, Stanford hosted this year's Stoney Burke due to scheduling conflicts with Treasure Island. It was the first regatta for UCLA since classes began last week, and although under-practiced the team averaged solid mid-fleet finishes, with skippers Matt Sirignano and Sam Wheeler breaking top 5 in multiple races. Breeze was on at the 9:30 AM report time, so racing began on schedule at 10:30 in 12-15 knots. Wind mellowed out to 8-10 knots by noon, and 8 races were heldin both A & B Divs. Sunday morning saw almost no breeze until almost 1 PM, with only one rotation for A and B divisions. This year's Stoney Burke also saw the racing debut of our newest member Belen Arguelles, who crewed for Peter Collister in the JV B Division. And of course much thanks to Sarah's lovely family for hosting us with-- as usual-- the utmost in hospitality and first class meals.

Regatta Report: St. Francis Intersectional
San Francisco, CA
By Sarah Lewis
As the UCLA team headed to Norcal for the Annual St. Francis regatta the rains cleared leaving two beautiful days full of sunshine and lots of wind! 31 varsity teams came from all over the country, including the Universities of Hawaii, Notre Dame, and Columbia. Steady winds, characteristic of this region, blew around 12-15 knots both days, with gusts over 18 knots. Clearly this was not the weather for light air crews, as Varsity B crew Sarah Lewis learned after falling out of a moving boat, but recovering with a 16th place after losing only 2 boats. On Sunday JV races ended early due to high winds and multiple capsizes. UCI took an early lead on the weekend’s races, which it was able to hold onto despite strong comebacks by USC and Stanford.

Regatta Report: South 5-6
Santa Barbara, CA
By Sarah Lewis
South 5 and 6 were held in the beautiful Santa Barbara on where we were greeted with blue and sunny skies. Before the weekend’s fleet regattas, on Friday UCLA participated in a friendly team race competition along with UCSB, USCD, UCI, USC and Cal. Steady winds allowed us to complete a double round robin. UCI and USC tied for 1st with 7-1 leads each. On Saturday UCSD swept South 5 under USC’s and UCI’s feet (or shall we say fleet). On Sunday at South 6 races were cut short due to a dying wind, only allowing 3 races per division. Still USC ended the day with a 1st place finish. Both regattas UCLA achieved the 5th place we needed to secure a spot in PCIYRA District Championships. Thanks to Kelly and Lyzz for driving up the trailer!

Regatta Report: Cal Team Races
Berkeley, CA
By Sarah Lewis
The Cal Team Race brought UCLA sailing back to Nor Cal for the first time this quarter. Six teams competed in a double round robin over the course of the weekend, ending in a final four with USC victorious. Blue skies and bright sunshine welcomed us both Saturday and Sunday at the Treasure Island Sailing Center. The wind took its time to fill in both days, allowing for a great game of ultimate Frisbee with Cal team members before Sunday’s races. When the wind finally filled in to 12 knots from the NW on Sunday afternoon, UCLA’s last race of the weekend ended with a well-deserved victory against Stanford. On Saturday the team met up with UCLA sailing alum, Kevin Richards, observer and judge of this regatta. Kevin provided helpful tips throughout the regatta and a very generous donation! Thank you Kevin!

Regatta Report: South Series 1-2
San Diego, CA By Sarah Lewis
January 29th and 30th brought us to the Mission Bay Aquatic Center in San Diego, California for South 1 & 2. The weekend proved beautiful and sunny, with an overall consistent breeze from the North. The gracious Darya of the UCSD team provided housing for the weekend – many thanks to her and
her roommates!
Varsity A team, Matt Sirignano and Sarah Lewis, collected one 4th place finish, and Varsity B team, Sam Wheeler and Tara Misra, sailed smoothly into one 5th place and one 3rd place finish. Over all UCLA now ranks as sthe 5th school in its division.

Regatta Report: Rose Bowl Intersectional
Long Beach, CA By Sarah Lewis
January 8th and 9th brought us to Long Beach, California for the 20th annual Rosebowl regatta, this year hosted by USC. Despite the heavy rain over 70 high school and collegiate teams were in attendance, bringing in a total of over 300 sailors – the largest combined high school and college regatta in the country. Many thanks to Lyzz who spoke at the college-high school forum on behalf of the UCLA team promoting our democratic and “family-like” team.
Along with the rain came wind, and lots of it. A southwestern breeze brought in a steady 8-10 knots on Saturday, and a stronger 16-20 knots on Sunday. While skippers and crew enjoyed the breeze, the rest of the team did their best to keep dry and warm under a canopy of umbrellas. All things considered, we returned home happily exhausted from the weekend’s events.
